Parade, contest and movie will honor nation's #1 collegiate cycling team
Durango, Colo. -- Fort Lewis College Cycling: America's #1 collegiate cycling program for the second year in a row.
Now that's a reason to celebrate!
Fort Lewis College invites all cycling fans to Tour de Fort, a toast to the FLC Cycling team, USA Cycling's #1 ranked Division I collegiate cycling program.
The Sept. 8 event will include:
ñ a 2.5-mile bicycle parade around campus
ñ recognitions of the FLC Cycling team and its champion riders
ñ free showing of "Race Across the Sky"
ñ a contest featuring FLC Cycling jerseys awarded to the best decorated Skyhawk-themed helmet, outfit, and bike
ñ free Tour de Fort t-shirts and FLC Cycling cowbells while they last
The Tour de Fort is free and open to everyone. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. on the Student Union Plaza with the costume & decoration contest, followed by the bike parade and recognitions ceremony. The evening will conclude with a showing of "Race Across the Sky," 7 p.m. in the Vallecito Room of the Student Union. The film is a documentary look at the grueling 2009 Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race, won by Lance Armstrong with help from FLC alumnus and former Cycling Coach Matt Shriver.
FLC Cycling can again call itself the best collegiate cycling program in the country after earning the highest overall point total for the 2010-2011 season in USA Cycling's Division I for the second straight year. The team carries the #1 ranking through the 2011-2012 collegiate cycling racing season.
The #1 ranking marks the fourth time FLC Cycling has earned the top honor since its founding in 1994. Since then, FLC Cycling has also been winners of 17 team national championships, including the team mountain bike national championship and seven individual national titles for 2010-11 racing season.
The #1 ranking capped a strong season that included a team national championship in mountain biking, second-place finish in cyclocross, and third in track and road. The team's success was led by Alister Ratcliff's winning of individual national championships in the men's road race and road omnium, Rotem Ishay's individual national championship in mountain biking's cross country and short track events, and Sage Wilderman's mountain biking national titles in women's short track, downhill, and omnium.
