The USA Pro Challenge and YOU!

Stage 1 Preview
with Bob Roll and Paul Sherwin
a
Special Tech Volunteers - USA Pro Challenge

In addition to Course and Parking Marshals for Race Morning, Dave and I are assembling an additional crew that will install signage, parking lot marking, capping parking meters, etc. These Race Tasks will be starting as we get close to the race, and will continue right through Noon on August 20th.

Even though we're actively recruiting hardened criminals, we're hand selecting good folks like you for our Special Tech Team.

As tasks with dates/times come up, Dave and I would email you with info, and if you're wanting to help with that task, great. If not then, no problem.

It's easy to get on our Special Tech List!

1) Sign up at- http://www.durango2012.com/volunteer/

2) Check- the "Tech Volunteer" Box

3) Write- "Larry/Dave's Special Tech Team" in the Comment Box
('Church' of the High Pines Volunteer - in the Comment Box works well also)

4) If you see anything else you’d like to volunteer for, please note that on the volunteer form as well.

Our USA Pro Challenge Volunteer Chair is Cathy, and  she can also add you to the Special Tech Team manually, if you've already registered. They can also change your contact info, etc.

Email Cathy at : DurangoVolunteers2012@gmail.com .

Yep, we're all volunteers.

La Posta Road Gravel Project

From Jim Davis, Director of Public Works
aa
We were recently contacted by the Helmur Corporation, (Bruce Heller) as they were hired to haul off the residual gravel from the now closed Tribal Weasel Skin Gravel Pit located on County Road 213, La Posta Road. The pit is located on Tribal land, and is not a land use activity permitted by the County. The haul is scheduled to start April 16th and should be completed in about six weeks (45 days), hauling six days a week, Monday - Saturday. It is our understanding most if not all the gravel will be used in the gas patch on access roads or well pads. Some of the gravel will be used on gas development sites directly to the west of the pit and will not impact public roads, however a significant amount of traffic will use CR 213 and 214. At our request they agreed to issue a public notice (submitted to the Herald).

Porta Potties on the Valley Loop

Once again, the porta potties on CR 250 and CR 203 are baaaack for all cyclists and runners. In case you missed it last year, the one on CR 250 is north of the Bar D on the west side of 250. The one on CR 203 is south of Trimble, by the huge red barn on the east side of 203. They should be installed this weekend.

Classica Citta di Padova - Road race - Results/report - Small wins in Padova

Effort and savvy pay off for American
By . March 17, 20:01
Carmen Small (US National Team) won the Classica Citta di Padova on Saturday, surprising many. Simona Frapporti (Be Pink) and Monia Baccaille (MCipollini Giambenini Gauss) finished second and third respectively.
Small pulled ahead of Frapporti n the final meters of the race. The pair comprising a two-woman break was chased unsuccessfully by a group of nine women.
The women completed nine laps of the race circuit. MCipollini Giambenini Gauss started the attacking with Valentina Carretta, Marta Tagliaferro and Marta Bastianelli. Each went in her own turn and was caught.
On the penultimate lap, Judith Arndt (Greenedge AIS) attacked. Baccaille and Malgorzata Jasinska (MCipollini Giambenini Gauss), Emma Johansson (Hitec Mistral), Trixi Worrack (Specialized Lululemon), Alexandra Burchenkova (Michela Fanini Record Rox), Frapporti, Evelyn Aris (Kleo Ladies Team), Small and Inga Cilvinaite (Diadora Pasta Zara) responded. The group quickly gained 30 seconds.
Diadora Pasta Zara applied pressure in an attempt to bring back Georgia Bronzini. Sensing the danger, Small attacked and only Frapporti could follow with 3km to go. The pair worked hard to earn a few seconds and with a few hundred meters to go, Small took to the front for a valuable few seconds. Baccaille won the bunch sprint for third.
"It seemed impossible to get away as the race was so controlled from the beginning," said Small. "The break on the third lap was crucial. We were 11, and they let us go. In the last lap, I tried to force the solution because I felt my legs were very good and ready for the test.
"I was afraid to follow Frapporti in the sprint, so I forced the pace, even in the last kilometers. I needed those few meters - it was crucial to be able to win. For me it's a good year started very well."

Ned Overend wins Cycling Legend Award

(Click the Video to See it, and the Article at VeloNews)

Endurance mountain bike legend Ned Overend received the Cycling Legend award at the Endurance Live! gala in Los Angeles Saturday night.

In his prime, Overend won six NORBA national championships and the first-ever world cross-country championship, in Durango, Colorado. The Specialized spokeman hasn’t slowed down much, however; at 56, he is still winning world championships, and has already done so this year, at the Masters World Cyclocross Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. Overend attributes his victory at the 1991 mountain bike worlds and his lengthy career to his relationship with Specialized Bicycles.

Being a Durango, Colorado-based employee of California’s Specialized Bicycles gives Overend the ability to train in the area that he loves and at an altitude that suits him. Known as the “Human Lung,” for his body’s ability to process oxygen, Overend has shaped the mountain biking world more than arguably any other rider in history.

Tad Elliott Wins the Birkie!

Durango's Tad Elliott

Wins the Big One

The 2012 Birkebeiner

U.S. Ski Teamer Tad Elliott makes juggling look easy, balancing a flourishing nordic career with a mountain biking career. Competing on the national teams for each discipline, Elliott has competition in his blood. His dad Mike Elliott was a cross country skier for the U.S. Ski Team in the 60s and 70s skiing in three Olympic Games. The Colorado native is hot on his dad's heels, skiing out of relative obscurity and into first at the 2010 U.S. Championships 50k and second in the 15k freestyle to announce his arrival on the cross country scene. He bested that performance in 2011, earning his second U.S. title in the 30k freestyle and winning several SuperTour events, including the SuperTour Finals 6k hill climb in Sun Valley. Elliott's addition to the squad bolsters a U.S. distance cross country crew led by veteran Kris Freeman.

Nine years after he won the race as part of the Saturn squad, US pro Tom Danielson will line out in the Tour de Langkawi next Friday motivated to ride well.

“As I’m talking now, I feel very good and I think I’ve had a good off season,” the Garmin Barracuda rider said, speaking to VeloNation in the lead-up to the race. “Personally, I’m in good shape, but I don’t know what kind of shape everyone else is in. I don’t think I’ll be creeping there, but it’s the first race and there are so many unknown factors.

“But, yeah, I’d like to perform well and contend for the race. That’s for sure. It’s a beautiful race. Let’s just put it this way…I’m not going to fly all the way to Malaysia to sit around in the peloton. If I can place well, then I will, for sure.”
LAlthough the majority of stages are expected to conclude with bunch sprints, the two likely deciders should suit Danielson’s characteristics. The first of those is the opening stage, a 20.3 kilometre time trial in Putrajaya. The second comes five days later when the race tackles the summit finish of Genting Highlands, where Danielson finished second nine years ago and took the race leader’s jersey that he would hold until the end of the event.

As a rider who is both strong against the clock and on the climbs, that course plus a very strong Garmin-Barracuda team means that he could be one of the big contenders. Still, given that it’s the first race of the year and he doesn’t know how the other riders are going, he’s not presuming anything as regards the final result.

“I’m really excited that our team is able to do it and I think it will be a lot of fun for sure. It looks like we have a good field too, which is different to the years past,” he said. “I think they only had one or two guys that are really good climbers, but right now it’s pretty solid.

“There’s Vinokourov, Rujano, and that guy who won last year [Yonnatha Monsalve]…I’m sure he is flying. Any of those guys on that Italian team full of Venezuelans and Colombians [Androni], Serpa and all those guys just haul ass. Rujano is one of the best guys in the world when he is on.”

If Rujano is indeed on, he’ll make his move on the race’s big summit finish. It’s a climb that Danielson knows too, and he’s got fond memories of it.

“You can’t really find a climb better than Genting Highlands, can you?” he asked, with a laugh. “Too bad they don’t have that in the Tour de France..!”

The Bishop on the Mount With Carl!

 Greetings from Sunny Tucson

The Bishop - Tom Danielson
a
I got a chance to train a few days with the Bishop on the Mount last week. It was an eye opener. Very impressive! This day I was able to handle him easily going up Mnt. Lemmon. I had to carry all the drinks and clothes too. But I just put my head down, dug down deep, pressed on my peddles and kept my Garmin on 25 mph and was able to beat him on all 5 laps up the Mount.

Couldn't have done it without the Hybrid.  :-)

I'll keep my day job for sure!

Fort Lewis College Increases Overall Lead

 Your Division I Collegiate Leaders

After narrowly missing the top step of the podium at the 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships, Fort Lewis College further solidified its first place ranking, with a healthy lead over second place Lees McRae College, 59 points behind in the yearlong competition with a maximum of 400 points available. Jumping to third place from fifth on the heels of their victory at Cyclo-cross isMarian University, who will hope to gain another spot or two when the fourth national championship that counts toward the rankings, USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships, takes place in Ogden, UT, in May.

Dropping one spot despite a strong fourth place finish at Cyclo-cross, is Lindsey Wilson College, which now sits in fourth place overall, a healthy 67 points ahead of University of Colorado-Boulder, which did not contest Cyclo-cross Nationals. Only 7 points separate second through fourth place, however, so the final rankings are truly up in the air.

Places sixth through ninth are made up of a tight race between stalwarts of the Division I field,Lindenwood, Colorado State, Midwestern State, and University of Vermont. Lindenwood, CSU, and UVM have put in solid performances at each of the three collegiate national championships held so far this academic year, and will most likely all do well at Road Nationals in May, as well. Midwestern State is still riding strong atop their commanding third place performance at USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships last fall, and could also be a major threat to the podium in Ogden. Rounding out the top ten is Appalachian State University, which is expected to put in a strong performance this May.

A lot is riding on these teams’ results at the 2012 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships as they compete to be the number one all around collegiate cycling team in Division I.

Fabulous Opportunity!

Dear Church of the High Pines Cyclists,

I'm at my senior year of Exercise Science at Fort Lewis College and in need for ten subjects for the senior research towards my graduation. I will greatly appreciate your help forwarding this email along your club/team members with the attached recruitment flyer. The research will be conducted at the Durango Performance Center (with Dr. Bruce Andrea) and will examine the effects of breathing supplemental oxygen on cycling performance - a relatively new sports performance topic.

I will be happy to answer any related questions and explain the research procedure. Bear in mind that every subject will be able to obtain his or her personal lactate threshold and VO2max analyses, which serve as a great baseline for training prescription for the upcoming season !

Thank you !
